What do psychologists do?
The problems that clients have vary widely.  You may simply be having some problems getting on with your life.  Many of my clients are anxious or depressed.  Many are having difficulty with work, love relationships or friendships.  Many are wondering who they are or to which career they might be suited.  Some are having difficulty recovering from alcohol, drug or internet addictions or are adult survivors or sexual abuse.  Some are experiencing communication problems and trouble with focusing and attention.  Some clients are are trying to make a significant decision, such as whether to get married or divorced, to change jobs or move, and so on.

I believe strongly that psychological assessment and psychotherapy are collaborative ventures.  By that I mean that my clients and I work together to achieve the client's goals.  Thus, the more open and honest that you can be, the better the psychotherapy will progress.  Your task is to talk about whatever is on your mind.  As your psychologist, my task is to listen carefully; look for patterns in your thinking and behaviour; to point out alternative interpretations of events or strategies for problem solving, and to ask you provocative questions to stimulate your thinking.  Psychotherapy helps you to come to your own conscious decisions about courses of action, based on  your own best interests instead of unconscious needs or conflicts.  There is never any negative judgment made if you decide not to try any suggestions of strategies.

It is my belief that the psychotherapeutic approach should be tailored to the client.  To this end, my first job is to assess what psychotherapeutic approach would be most useful to you.  Usually this is done by asking you questions and by one or two personality questionnaires.  Different clients will progress at different rates and may be receiving different types of psychotherapy.  What matters is what works for you.
