Many of the clients who work with him, come to therapy feeling really stuck. They often tell him that no matter how many positive changes they've made it still feels like, deep inside, something is wrong. Oftentimes, they say that they feel defective, unrepairable and broken. Over time, the methods he uses will help you change your stance towards your unwanted thoughts, feelings, memories and sensations, choose a meaningful direction and move in that direction without having to continue to 'fight' with the past and present or struggle with worries about the future. During the first session, he'll get an idea about where you want to go with your life, the types of things you've tried using to fix the problem and where you're at right now. After the initial meeting, he'll be giving you things to do on your own between sessions, like listening to CD's, thinking about what you're thinking about or perhaps recording what you've experienced during your day. He often finds that just a few sessions are all that is needed to clarify the issues that have been holding you back or keeping you stuck. A big part of making progress in therapy, however, is having a good client/therapist relationship, so he encourages you to call him so you can discuss your situation before meeting.

The process is a little different if your coming to see Dr. de Jong for career or occupational concerns. While the goals of vocational counseling are similar to therapy, the methods are not. During the first session he'll get a working/employment history and also provide you with questionnaires that you'll take home to complete. These 'assessment tools' help both of you figure out your interests, values and job-related personality type. He notes that, typically, three to four sessions and the completion of some assessment inventories are all that is required to find a satisfying direction.

Why see a psychologist?
Psychologists are in a unique position to help you deal with whatever problems you're facing.  Their education, supervised practice and membership in the Health Care Act provide you with the assurance that you'll be treated expertly and in an ethical and professional manner.  In his practice, he'll get acquainted with you through an interview (1 to 2 hours) and use a number of different psychological and emotional status assessment instruments to get a full picture of your problem(s).  The intake interview and the assessment tools provide useful background information on your current levels of functioning and can be used later to assess your progress.

If you're coming to treatment due to an auto accident, whether as a driver, passenger, pedestrian or cyclist, you'll be spending a few hours detailing your life before the accident and exploring the impact the accident has had on your social, emotional, occupational and spiritual functioning.  He'll also be asking you to complete some assessment inventories while you're in the office and using these to prepare a report for your lawyer; the person that likely referred you to his office.  Typically, assessments require about 3 to 5 hours of your time and are paid for by your lawyer or ICBC.  Treatment for automobile driving anxiety or some of the other after-effects, e.g., depression, adjustment problems or PTSD, range in time from a few sessions to many months of treatment, depending on your situation.  Again, these are often paid for by your lawyer or ICBC.  Press here  to read more about auto accident treatment.
