Career Counseling His approach to career counseling is to employ state-of-the-art assessment inventories combined with clinical experience and your 'inner wisdom' to guide the process. He usually spends the first session discussing your education, work experience and goals as well as the valued direction you wish to take your life. At the end of the session, he'll provide you with three or four assessment inventories that compare the your interests, values and personality to individuals who have been employed for a least 4 years and are satisfied with the work they're doing.
Dr. de Jong notes that, getting a good fit between the client's occupation and their interests, values and personality is really important because if there is a bad fit, not only will the person probably dislike the work, they may also experience difficulties with their co-workers. For example, if you're conservative, diligent, safety oriented and conscientious and find yourself working with creative, fast-paced, risk takers, you'll probably dislike the work and may not have much in common with your coworkers.
Dr. de Jong works with students, adults and retirees, yes retirees! It's surprising but many retired individuals need help to transition to a completely different phase of life. Many miss the routine and the camaraderie of day-to-day work and yearn to make a difference. Rediscovering their values, interests and direction can be truly inspiring. His work with students usually involves discovering a direction when entering the later phases of their educational training, grade 11+. Again, it can be very rewarding to see a student select a direction and move ahead with their academic life. Working with adults exposes him to a much wider range of issues and levels of working experience. For example, he may work with executives who are looking to explore their leadership potential and wish to learn in what areas they may benefit from additional training or experience or with clients seeking direction following disappointment with their current career path. Recent reports show that job dissatisfaction is at about 20%, up from 17% about a decade ago. A part of this is the additional demands being made on employees but Dr. de Jong notes that there is oftentimes a bad fit between the employee and the job.
